Literacy

LITERACY

English is taught in a knowledge-, language-, and text-rich environment. Our focus is on developing students' speaking, listening, reading, writing, and thinking skills. Literacy is the foundation for all learning, so we prioritise strong, explicit, and systematic instruction in core literacy skills from the early years. These skills include word-level reading and spelling, oral reading fluency, handwriting, sentence-level writing, and academic language. As students progress through each year level, they continue to develop and apply these skills in more complex ways.

Students receive about 10 hours of English instruction per week, which helps them build both their literacy skills and their love for reading and writing. In the early years, Foundation to Year 2 students participate in daily phonics lessons, using the Orton-Gillingham approach. From Year 2 to Year 6, students follow the Spelling Mastery program. Reading and writing are closely linked, with specific lessons that focus on sentence structure, vocabulary building, paragraph construction, and drafting and editing texts. Our goal is to ensure every student develops a strong foundation in literacy, enabling them to read, write, and understand the rules of the English language.
